Description
American Museum of Natural History, Manhattan Square, W. 77th to W. 81st Sts. Columbus Ave to Central Park West; founded 1869; cornerstone laid by President Grant 1874. The first section opened in 1877; building completed 1899. It is one of the largest Natural History Museums in the world. It contains a technical library of 46,000 volumes besides many notable collections. The lecture Hall seats 1400. There are over 500,000 visitors annually. Exhibit Halls contain 213,000 sq. ft.
