Title
Snowy Owl, specimen from the American Museum of Natural History, postcard
Description
Verso: Giant Post Card. The American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA. Snowy Owl Nyctea scandiaca (Arctic region). The Snowy Owl makes its home in the treeless Arctic wastes where it lives and nests on the ground and feeds upon lemmings and the like. The dense feathers extend down to the toes and cover every part of the body, providing complete insulation against the cold. Sometimes food becomes scarce, especially in the winter, and then considerable numbers of Snowy Owls slowly migrate south into southern Canada and northern United States. At that time large numbers of them are shot by careless hunters who do not appreciate the beauty that this fine bird lends to the wintry landscape.Photographed from specimen in the American Museum of Natural History, New York, U.S.A.
