Pipe with bowl in the shape of two human heads, wood and ceramic, Upper Nile Region, Africa
Description
Josef Natterer was consul at Khartoum in 1862 when he collected this pipe, making it one of the first anthropomorphic carvings acquired by Europeans from the Upper Nile region. Two heads serve as bowls, and a full figure embellishes the stem.
