Title
Double spatula, ivory figures at top, possibly Mangbetu, (Belgian) Congo
Description
Before the Arabs began large-scale collecting of ivory in the mid-nineteenth century, the Mangbetu rarely used it for making ornaments. By the early twentieth century, however, ivory had become a popular material for Mangbetu carvers. This double spatula, which could not have been used as an implement, was probably made for Lang.
Materials: Ivory.
