Water jar with lid, Mangbetu, (Belgian) Congo
Description
Made by the coil method, Mangbetu pottery took many forms. After the shape was established, the potter could choose from several techniques to add patterns and textures. Two of the most common techniques were to use the fingers to make indentations and to roll small wooden roulettes with incised designs over the clay surface.
