Title
Whisk, ivory and elephant hair, Mangbetu people of Africa
Description
Fly whisks formed part of court regalia. Lang wrote that the whisk was a sort of scepter of the chiefs in common use with the Mangbetu and all the neighboring tribes, generally worn in the right hand [and] used as a flywhip. The wearer enjoys evidently a certain distinction as it is the privilege of chiefs and other important men to carry one of these fiber bundles" (375). This fly whisk was carved by a Mangbetu but used by the Zande chief Akenge.
Materials: Ivory, hair (elephant), cord.
