Title
Wood and ivory boxes, Mangbetu people of Africa
Description
This pair of carved boxes represents a Mangbetu king and a queen, who wears the typical female hairdress (tumburu). The boxes illustrate the limits of applying ethnic labels to art from this region: the carving of the wood and ivory was done by a Mangbetu artist, Karibu, but the engraving on the ivory is the work of Zande artist Saza.
Materials: Wood, ivory.
