Title
Cooking place for crabs caught in Alaskan waters before being boxed and shipped to the Seattle market
Description
From Anthropology Smith Scrapbook: Cooking place and the largest catch of crabs made up to this date in Alaskan waters and probably on the Pacific Coast. These were taken during the first two weeks that crabs were taken for market in Alaskan waters. See also no. 46144. At first the crabs were shipped alive, but health authorities at Seattle would not pass them, possibly because of graft, then the crabs were cooked as shown here and sent out iced in boxes, perhaps 6 by 4 by 2. About 4 such boxes being sent at a shipment. They were said to keep fresh for five days, it takes about three days for a steamer to reach Seattle from here, so there remains about two days in which to dispose of the crabs.
