Title
Mangbetu village scene with women seated together
Description
Palavers were often about women; this one concerns a marriage settlement. Nenzima, a principal wife of Chief Okondo as well as wife to preceding chiefs, was known for her political abilities. She often played a major role in settling disputes. Lang noted in the caption for this photograph that Nenzima "takes [an} active part in the palaver-- in fact, does most of the speaking."
