Title
Basket, plant fiber, H 7.8 in, Mangbetu people of the Congo, Africa
Description
Baskets like this one held cooked foods such as bananas, vegetables, meat, and fish. Before food was placed in the basket, it was lined with banana leaves that had been held over a fire to give them a papery consistency. Lang called this lining, "Mangbetu-paper." Chiefs' wives cooked food and delivered it to the royal court in baskets prepared this way.
Materials: Plant fiber, wood.
