Title
Hat, plant fiber and feathers, Mangbetu people of Africa
Description
Mangbetu hats combine basketry with feathers in various ways. Here, the basic hat form is embellished with fiber loops and feathers. Hats were generally worn by men. Czekanowski, working in the region at the same time as Lang, noted that a woman wearing a hat was considered "provocative" (1924, 135). Today, however, older women sometimes wear basketry hats during traditional dances.
Materials: Cane, bark cloth, plant fiber, leather, cord.
