Description
In 1870 Georg Schweinfurth, a German botanist, became the first European to reach the Mengbetu and visit the court of the Mangbetu ruler, King Mbunza. Schweinnfurth's description in his book The Heart of Africa (1874) of the splendor and magnificence of the Mangbetu court became the basis for many subsequent myths about the Mangbetu people.
